Settlement Along the Ohio River
Rabbit Hash was first settled in the early nineteenth century as farmers, traders, and river travelers established a vibrant community along the southern bank of the Ohio River in Boone County, Kentucky. The fertile river bottom land and access to water transportation made it an ideal location.
The General Store is Founded
The legendary Rabbit Hash General Store was established, becoming the social and commercial heart of the community. It remains one of the oldest continuously operating general stores in Kentucky — a living testament to the enduring spirit of Rabbit Hash.
A Community Flourishes
Through the latter half of the nineteenth century, Rabbit Hash grew as a thriving river town. Steamboats stopped at its shores, businesses lined its main road, and its unique character began to take shape — marked by an independent, good-humored spirit that still defines the community today.
The Great Flood
The catastrophic Ohio River Flood of 1937 devastated much of Rabbit Hash, inundating buildings and testing the resilience of its residents. The community's recovery and rebuilding demonstrated the remarkable determination of its people to preserve their way of life.
Historical Society Founded
The Rabbit Hash Historical Society was officially established as a nonprofit organization with an EIN of 31-1105633, dedicated to preserving the community's heritage. The Society began its mission to document, protect, and celebrate the irreplaceable history of Rabbit Hash.
Preservation Continues
The Rabbit Hash Historical Society continues its vital mission — maintaining historic structures, hosting community events, and ensuring that the stories and spirit of this remarkable Kentucky river community are passed down to future generations. Rabbit Hash remains one of America's most cherished historic small towns.

This beloved tradition began in 1998 and has attracted national media attention, cementing Rabbit Hash's reputation as one of America's most uniquely spirited communities.
